it seems to me as if Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) had already been working at the office when the first season began but i'm pretty sure that he is working his first day at the office on the first episode of the first season. so which one is it? when did Jim start working at the office? Also, I have the same question about Ryan Howard (B.J. Novak). when did ryan start working at the office?

Jim started working there from 3-8 (I can't remember) years before the show started.Ryan started the day the first episode takes place.

Jim was working there well before the show started. Wikipedia says that he's been working there 5 years, but I'm not sure when that was written or if it represents the start of the show. You might be thinking of his first day at the Stamford branch. If you remember back to the first episode, you might remember Jim was pretty comfortable in the office, so you could conclude it wasn't this first day.Ryan started his temp job the first episode and got promoted after.

It was Ryan's first day in the Office during the pilot episode. There isn't an exact date for when Jim started but you can tell it was before the first episode because of his level of comfort in his job. Also in one episode there is a picture of Dwight and Jim, looking very young (pretty sure Dwight may have had a mullet!), going on their first sales call together. So it can be assumed that he has worked there several years. I would say at least 3 years, but he has most certainly worked at the office longer than Ryan.
