Why in NCIS is McGee called probie all the time?

NCIS NCIS is a police procedural television series in America about a ficticious team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which serves criminal investigations involving the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

i just started watching re-runs of the show and can never figure out why they call him that.

"Probie" stands for "Probationary" meaning new... so they call him Probie cuz he's a new field agent..
