Throughout the series, Lost has been used in a spiritual context where these people were lost in the real world only to find themselves on this strange island.Jack who found the leader in himself on the island realizes what it was he lost when he left and does want to go back. I don't think the island"wants them back."But now that Jack and the others are off the island, they realize what it was they lost when they were on the island. Now as far as the others. I don't think they are the original island inhabitants. Because woman can't have babies on the island, the"others"must have come from somewhere else. I'm going to take a guess, and say that they were pirates or smugglers who got shipwrecked like Desmond, and can't leave. Although they may have been and early faction of the Dharma initiative, who like Locke do not wish to leave the island. I'm more interested in the submarine, and why the Others didn't destroy it when they exterminated the Dharma Initiative and why the Dharma Initiative is able to come and go off the island through their own free will.
