Picks up where season 4 left off. Rita is dead in the bathtub, Dexter holding bloody baby. Cops show up. They think Dexter might have killed her (but they later learn he had an alibi). Quinn remains suspicious of him, and hires a crooked cop to look into it. Dexter goes to Rita's funeral. He has difficulty dealing with the unusual emotions following her death, and eventually realizes that he actually loved her (something he didn't think he could do). Back on the hunt, Dexter stalks a possible killer who works in dead-animal-pickup. Follows him to a swamp, where the guy has been dumping bodies - dead women in barrels. Dexter kills him. But while he's killing him, he spots someone in the house watching him. Turns out to be one of the guy's victims, a young woman named Lumen, who survived. Dexter, having been seen, doesn't know what to do with her. So he takes her captive and locks her up, temporarily, in a cabin. She tries to escape, but eventually comes to understand that Dexter is a nice killer, and promises to keep his secret. She tells him that the guy was just one part of a larger band of guys who have been raping and murdering women. And she is pissed off. She wants to kill them all. Sounds good to Dexter. He tries to get her to go home, so he can hunt them alone, as usual. But she wants be in on it - for revenge. She begins stalking them on her own, and gets in trouble, so Dexter takes her under his wing and lets her in on the fun. They find and kill most of her tormentors, but it turns out that the leader is a famous motivational speaker, who is rich, powerful, and rather clever. While stalking her attackers, Dexter and Lumen fall in love. Debra, meanwhile, is investigating the case of the barrel girls, and realizes some vigilantes are stalking their killers. Along the way, the crooked cop that Quinn hired finds out that Dexter and Lumen are up to no good. He kidnaps Dexter, but Dexter kills him. Finally, the main villain captures Lumen and takes her to a deserted summer camp where he staged his first attack on a woman. Dexter follows him there, gets caught himself, but escapes. Together, he and Lumen kill the guy. While they're doing that, his sister, Debra, shows up and catches them. But because there's plastic sheeting in the way, she doesn't know it's her brother. By then, Debra has grown sympathetic to the vigilantes she knows has been killing the bastards off, so she lets them go. Lumen, having killed all of her attackers, decides she no longer wants to kill people, so she leaves town - disappointing Dexter, who thought he had found the perfect partner in crime. Season ends with Dexter and his friends/family celebrating the first birthday of his son, Harrison. Dexter now realizes he is capable of love.
