Likely, this is to help curve the influx of multiple voting by the same people for the same performer on the same night. It's easy to up and create multiple email accounts or user names to use as a way of voting, but it takes far more effort and time to create a fake Facebook. Additionally, Facebook would catch on eventually and you might risk getting all of your accounts suspended.
Sure, it's a big pain in the butt if you don't have a Facebook, but you didn't up and create one either did you? It looks like it's working and that's a good thing, because I've watched American Idol and caught myself asking, "how in the name of all that is logical did that douche bag just win this thing?" LOL It is probably their hope that this will make the voting more fair.
If not, and I'm way off the mark with their logic, then I have no idea.
