I think it is real but even within real team based work, such as call cent re work, there is a large amount of team based role playing for training on a regular basis and people are playing to an audience (the management) which judges them and forms opinions about prospects for promotion based on them so everyone is acting even in real jobs.

There are probably very few jobs in large organizations which would actually allow staff to be their true self.
